Best Oscar-Winning Songs

The Academy Award for Best Original Song category was introduced in 1934 during the 7th Annual Academy Awards.  The first winner was “The Continental” from the movie The Gay Divorcee, and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers sang it in the picture.  It beat out “The Carioca” (from Flying Down to Rio, sung by Alice Gentle, Movita Castaneda, and Etta Moten) and “Love in Bloom” (from She Loves Me Not, sung by Bing Crosby.)  I was going to choose ten winning songs and another ten nominated songs, but there are so many that I like that I’m expanding it to 25 winning and 30 nominated songs.  I will admit…most of the top ten in both categories are songs that came out in the last 30 years.  I think that you’ll enjoy my selections anyway.

Sadie Hawkins Dance Songs

Sadie Hawkins dances are named after a character in the comic strip Li’l Abner, created by cartoonist Al Kapp.  Sadie was tired of waiting for bachelors to come a-courtin’, so she would ask them out.  Now during the Sadie Hawkins dances, the ladies ask the men out.  Sadie Hawkins dances occur in middle schools, high schools, and even colleges.  I thought I would give you a list of female empowerment songs.  While Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” is the ultimate female empowerment anthem…it’s not a very good song to dance to.  I thought I would make the list songs that you can dance to as well.
